Vial Label Design Guide

Everything you need to print professional, compliant labels for your research peptide vials.

📐 Label Dimensions

Research peptide vials come in standard sizes, and labels must fit precisely without peeling or wrapping awkwardly. The most common vial size for 2mg–20mg peptides is a 3mL or 5mL crimp-top vial with a diameter of approximately 22–24mm.

📏

Standard 2mg Vial Label

1" × 2.5" (25mm × 63mm)
Fits 3mL vials with ~22mm diameter. Most common size for single-peptide research vials.

📐

Larger Vial Label

1.5" × 3" (38mm × 76mm)
For 5mL or 10mL vials. Used for bulk powders (100mg+ GHK-Cu, NAD+, etc.).

🔄

Wrap-Around Label

1" × 4" (25mm × 102mm)
Wraps fully around smaller vials. Fits more text but harder to apply evenly.

💎

Premium Clear Label

1" × 2.5" clear vinyl
Transparent background for a clean, professional look. Best with dark ink on light vials.

💡 Tip: Always measure your actual vials before ordering labels. Vial dimensions can vary by supplier by 1–2mm, which matters for wrap-around labels.

Standard Vial Dimensions Reference

Vial Size Height Diameter Recommended Label
2mL 32mm 18mm 0.75" × 2"
3mL 42mm 22mm 1" × 2.5"
5mL 52mm 24mm 1.5" × 3"
10mL 62mm 28mm 1.5" × 3.5"
20mL 72mm 32mm 2" × 4"

🖨️ Recommended Sticker Paper

Choosing the right sticker material is critical for labels that stay on through freezing, handling, and storage. Here are our top recommendations:

Best for Laser Printers

Product Size Labels/Sheet Material Best For
Avery 5160 1" × 2⅝" 30 White matte General use, most popular
Avery 5260 1" × 2⅝" 30 Easy-peel matte Faster peeling, same size
Avery 6460 1" × 2⅝" 30 Clear glossy Premium transparent look
Online Labels OL5175 1" × 2.625" 30 White matte Budget Avery alternative
SheetLabels.com S-8525 1" × 2.5" 28 Weatherproof polyester Freezer-rated, waterproof

Best for Inkjet Printers

Product Size Labels/Sheet Material Best For
Avery 8160 1" × 2⅝" 30 White matte Standard inkjet labels
Avery 8660 1" × 2⅝" 30 Clear glossy Inkjet clear labels
Online Labels OL3025 1" × 2.625" 30 Weatherproof Waterproof inkjet
⚠️ Important: Standard paper labels are NOT freezer-rated. If you store vials at -20°C, use polyester or vinyl labels with freezer-grade adhesive. Paper labels will peel, smudge, or fall off in the freezer.
💡 Pro tip: For the best results at -20°C, use polyester (PET) labels with permanent acrylic adhesive. Brands like Uline S-11744 or SheetLabels.com weatherproof polyester are specifically rated for freezer storage.

📝 How to Use the Label Template

Our printable vial label template makes it easy to create professional labels in minutes. Here's how:

  1. Open the template — Navigate to /marketing/vial-label.html in your browser. The dark-theme form area will appear on screen.
  2. Use a quick-fill preset — Click one of the preset buttons (Retatrutide, Tirzepatide, Semaglutide, etc.) to auto-fill common products. This saves time if you're labeling standard catalog items.
  3. Enter custom details — Fill in the form fields: product name, specification (e.g., "2mg | Lyophilized Powder"), CAS number, catalog number, lot number, and expiration date. All 10 labels update in real-time as you type.
  4. Review the preview — Each page shows 5 vial label pairs (front + back = 10 labels total). Verify that all text fits within the label boundaries.
  5. Load your sticker paper — Insert Avery 5160 (or similar) label sheets into your printer. Make sure the paper feed orientation matches your printer's requirements.
  6. Print — Click the "🖨️ Print Labels" button. In the print dialog, set: paper size to Letter (8.5" × 11"), scale to 100% (no fit-to-page), and enable background graphics.
  7. Apply to vials — Peel labels carefully and apply to clean, dry vials. See the application tips below for best results.
💡 Print test: Always print a test page on plain paper first and hold it up against your label sheet to verify alignment before using actual sticker paper.

💰 Cost Estimates for Bulk Label Printing

Here's what you can expect to spend on labels at different volumes, whether printing yourself or ordering pre-printed:

DIY Printing (Self-Print on Avery Sheets)

Volume Sheets Needed Paper Cost Toner/Ink Cost Total Cost Cost per Label
50 labels (5 products) 5 sheets ~$2.50 ~$0.50 ~$3.00 $0.06
150 labels (15 products) 15 sheets ~$7.50 ~$1.50 ~$9.00 $0.06
500 labels (50 products) 50 sheets ~$20.00 ~$5.00 ~$25.00 $0.05
1,500 labels (full catalog ×10) 150 sheets ~$50.00 ~$15.00 ~$65.00 $0.04

Professional Printing (Pre-Printed Custom Labels)

Volume Vendor Material Total Cost Cost per Label Turnaround
50 labels StickerMule Vinyl ~$57 $1.14 4 business days
250 labels Vistaprint Paper gloss ~$30 $0.12 5–7 business days
500 labels UPrinting Paper matte ~$50 $0.10 3–5 business days
1,000 labels OnlineLabels.com Polyester ~$80 $0.08 5–7 business days
5,000 labels UPrinting (roll) Vinyl roll ~$180 $0.04 7–10 business days
💡 Break-even: DIY printing is cheaper below ~300 labels. Above that, professional printing becomes cost-competitive and produces sharper results (especially for small text and barcodes).

✨ Tips for Applying Labels to Vials

A perfectly printed label is wasted if it's applied crooked, bubbled, or peeling. Follow these best practices:

Preparation

  • Clean the vial surface — Wipe with isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) and let dry completely. Oils from fingerprints prevent adhesion.
  • Ensure vials are at room temperature — Cold vials cause condensation, which ruins adhesive. Let frozen vials thaw to room temp before labeling.
  • Work on a clean, flat surface — Dust and debris under labels create bumps and weak spots.

Application Technique

  • Start from one edge — Peel the label and align one short edge first, then slowly roll the vial to apply the rest. This prevents air bubbles.
  • Use the "hinge" method — Fold the backing paper to expose only the center of the label. Position it, press down the center, then peel away the backing from each side.
  • Smooth with a flat tool — Use a credit card or squeegee to press out air bubbles from center to edges.
  • Overlap on the back — If the label wraps around, leave a small overlap (2–3mm) on the back side. Don't overlap on the front where text is printed.

Freezer Storage

  • Wait 24 hours before freezing — Let the adhesive fully cure at room temperature before placing labeled vials in the freezer.
  • Use freezer-rated labels only — Standard paper labels will fail at -20°C. Polyester or vinyl with acrylic adhesive is required.
  • Avoid frost buildup — Keep labeled vials in sealed bags or containers to prevent frost from lifting label edges.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Labeling wet or cold vials — Moisture is the #1 enemy of label adhesion.
  • ❌ Stretching the label — Labels should lay flat without tension. Stretched labels shrink back and peel.
  • ❌ Using inkjet prints without sealant — Inkjet ink is water-based and will smudge. Use a clear label protector spray or laser-printed labels.
  • ❌ Placing labels over the crimp cap — Labels should only be on the glass body, not the aluminum cap, or they'll tear during opening.
⚠️ Compliance note: All research peptide labels must include "FOR RESEARCH USE ONLY" and "Not for human consumption" text. Check your local regulations for additional labeling requirements.
